Privacy Policy

Pets Grants Finder is a discovery platform for publicly available pet grant information. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have — including how the homepage's location-aware grants board works.
Location-aware homepage
To help you find grants relevant to where you are, the homepage can show a country-filtered view by default instead of the full worldwide catalogue. You are always in control of this, and it never blocks or slows down the page:
- Your choice always wins. If you pick a country (or choose "All Countries" / Worldwide) from the location control, that explicit choice is used immediately and is never silently overridden by automatic detection.
- Remembering your choice. An explicit selection is saved in a small preference cookie (
g4p_location) on your device for up to a year, purely so we don't ask again on your next visit. It stores only a country slug or "worldwide"/"all" — never your IP address, precise location, or any other identifier. You can change or clear it at any time using the "Change" link next to the location badge. - Automatic country-level detection. If you haven't made a choice (and have no saved preference), we may estimate your approximate country from your IP address using a server-side country-level lookup provider, so the homepage can default to something more useful than a generic worldwide list. This is country-level only — it is never precise enough to identify a city, neighborhood, or exact location.
- We do not use your device's GPS or browser location. Browser-based geolocation is deliberately disabled site-wide (our Permissions-Policy blocks the browser Geolocation API entirely). Only the coarse, server-side IP estimate above is used, and only when nothing else is available.
- What we store from an IP lookup — and for how long. We never store your raw IP address for this purpose. Instead, a one-way cryptographic hash of the IP (which cannot be reversed back into the original address) is cached briefly alongside the detected country, solely to avoid repeating the same external lookup on your next request. These cache entries automatically expire after a short retention window and are purged on a routine schedule — this is a short-lived performance cache, not a log of visitors or their movements.
- If detection fails or is unavailable — the lookup times out, is disabled, returns no result, or your IP is a private/internal address (e.g. local testing) — the homepage simply falls back to the full Worldwide catalogue. Detection failures never produce an error or a slow page load.
- No account or login required for any of the above; location awareness works the same for every visitor.
Curated, search-engine-indexed country and category pages (for example, dedicated pages for a specific country or animal type) are unaffected by any of this — they always show the same content to everyone and are never personalized.
Our current country-detection implementation uses IPinfo Lite when configured. IPinfo attribution is provided because its public Lite service requires attribution.
Alerts and saved searches
If you subscribe to alerts or saved searches, we store only the email address and search criteria needed to notify you, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any notification email.
Other technical data
Like most websites, our servers process standard connection information (such as IP address and request details) transiently to serve pages and protect the site against abuse (for example, rate limiting). Where an IP address is used for the location feature described above, it is handled exactly as described in that section.
What we don't do
We do not sell personal data. We do not use precise/GPS location. We do not build cross-site advertising profiles. Aggregated, non-identifying usage information may be used to improve the catalogue and discovery engine.
